What is RFID?

We are quite familiar with the phrase “Radio Frequency Identification,” RFID.
The RFID technology uses electromagnetic fields to transmit data from an RFID tag to a reader, providing accurate, real-time tracking information. Unlike barcode scanners, RFID readers do not require to be pointed directly at a tag to get scanned. Instead, employees using RFID can get scan which is accurate even if scanned from several meters away and process multiple scans in seconds. The RFID technology has been widely used since the later phase of the 1970s and recently many more consumer applications are emerging especially for events and asset tracking.

The RFID system consists of two types of devices: RFID readers and RFID tags. The RFID reader is a device used to gather information from an RFID tag, which is used to track individual objects. Data from the tag is transferred via radio waves to a reader. A tag consists of two parts chip and an antenna respectively. The chip stores and processes information. The communication between the antenna of chip & the reader is carried out using the radio signal.

What does RFID mean for events?

There are many ways event creators can use RFID to streamline the event experience and allow for better data capture. The main applications of RFID for events are:

1. Entry to the Event:
As RFID equipment’s like readers and Tags are used to capture and read data faster, entry to an event is easy in comparison to other electronic scanners. Even staff doesn’t need any kind of training to use it, because RFID equipment lights up green for go and red for stop – simple for security to process. Even Parking management also becomes easier through RFID tags and readers.

2. Flexible access control:
Grant access faster, restricted access to specific zones (like VIP areas or conference sessions) where only a few of your overall attendee base should be allowed into for specific purposes.

3. Data collection
RFID technology gives real-time insight into the movement of attendees through events. This can help you make in-the-moment decisions required if any problem arises such as “We need another entry lane”.

4. No scope of fraud
RFID chips have an extra layer of security that makes them nearly impossible to duplicate, which means no more fraud can be done.

Types of RFID solution provided by IDCUBE for various industries:

  • IDLR 12 Long range reader
High-speed performance UHF reader for long-distance (up to 12m) access control, identification, and authentication process.

  • IDLR 06 Medium range reader
High-speed performance UHF reader for long-distance (up to 6m) access control, identification, and authentication process.

  • IDLR 01 RFID Tag encoder
Easy to install, comply with ISO18000-6C EPC Gen 2 protocol with an operating range of 860-960MHz and configure RFID tags with client-specific data.

  • ASSA Tag (Tamper Proof)
RFID, UHF card which is specially meant for vehicles & metal assets to ensure that they are not stolen/ tampered by any unauthorized user.

  • ASSA Tag (PVC)
UHF, reliable and easy-to-carry smart card.

  • ASSA Tag (PVC Dual)
UHF card, that is a reliable and easy-to-carry smart card.

  • Protean VBOX
This is a standalone IP based controller, specially designed to control vehicle access to residential & corporate parking lots. It comes with an in-built web server for easy plug and plays installation. It is designed to eliminate problems faced by system Integrators while installing and operating typical Wiegand based controllers and Long-Range Readers.

Conclusion

It is a key challenge for almost any business to manage and locate important assets. Time spent in searching for critical equipment can lead to expensive delays or downtime, missed deadlines and customer commitments, and wasted labor. Companies have earlier solved this problem by managing assets using unique serial numbers and spreadsheets or tracking equipment with barcode labels. However, both methods require a good amount of manual labor. One way to improve asset management is by utilizing radio frequency identification (RFID) solution to automatically track your expensive movable or immovable assets.
